SECONDARY / IB
WHAT IS IB?
IBO is an educational foundation based in the city of Geneva, Switzerland. Only schools recognized, evaluated and accredited by IBO are authorized to prepare and submit candidates for the IB Diploma.
Colégio Planalto was recognized in 1992 by IBO for teaching IB.
THE INTERNATIONAL BACHELOR'S COURSE AIMS AT THREE BIG OBJECTIVES:
-
Enable the acquisition of a broad general culture that provides students with the intellectual tools they will need in their future university career.
-
Develop in students a high degree of autonomy in the acquisition of knowledge and in the capacity for analysis and critical reflection.
- Sensitize students to cultures different from their own, so that they become open and enlightened adults, tolerant and willing to communicate their knowledge, experiences and experiences with each other.
The IB Diploma has become ideal for students who want to dedicate themselves to obtaining a demanding secondary course of the highest quality and worldwide credibility.
Its bilingual character and its own structure facilitates not only the future path in any university course, but also enhances access to a professional career.
Universities such as Cambridge, Harvard, Heidelberg, McGill, Oxford, Princeton, Sorbonne, UBC, Yale, consider the IB Diploma, after several years of experience, as the "best secondary course in the world".
In Portugal, the IB course allows access to all universities, given that it is “equivalent to the completion of secondary education in the Portuguese educational system”, according to Ordinances No. 779/98 and 433/2005 of 19 April, using IB exam scores as replacing those of national exams.

Most universities and programs teaching English around the world have English proficiency requirements for international students. Many universities accept scores on language courses from the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP) as proof of language proficiency. However, these requirements are generally uneven across institutions, and there are still many institutions that require DP students to present proficiency exam scores in addition to those they obtained at the DP. As such, the IBO commissioned the UK National Recognition Information Center (UK NARIC) to carry out an independent comparative study of DP English language courses and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR). The aim of the study was to establish what level of English language competence of non-native English speakers demonstrated by different DP course grades compared to CEFR levels. The result is mirrored in this document: Document Colégio Planalto was a pioneer among all Portuguese schools, in investing on internationalization when it began, three decades ago, negotiations with the prestigious International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) with a view to our joining the “Diploma Programme”, that is, the application of the International Baccalaureate curricula in Secondary Education. After a long and laborious process of adapting to the requirements of the IBO, the International Baccalaureate curriculum was adopted for Secondary Education in Planalto and our first finalist students who took the international exams, obtained the IB Diploma in 1996. Since then, we have had a history and experience of twenty-four years of successes and excellent grades from students who, upon finishing the “Second-IB”, were able to enter the best universities in Portugal and abroad. Colégio Mira Rio has also started teaching the IB curriculum in Secondary, but still with no finalist students. Equivalence of the proficiency levels of the Diploma Programme and the Common
